Freshness warning
NBA expansion decision: The NBA announces whether it will expand, how many teams it may add, and whether Seattle is selected.
What we know
These updates show where the NBA and Seattle stand today. They do not each get their own percentage.
01
What to watch next
The NBA announces whether it will expand, how many teams it may add, and whether Seattle is selected.
The NBA is studying whether to expand and is looking at Seattle and Las Vegas. No reviewed official source announces a final expansion decision or a Seattle team award.
02
What to watch next
The NBA publicly identifies and approves the group that would own a Seattle team.
One Roof has publicly said it would pursue a team, and reporting describes another possible group. The admitted sources do not establish that the NBA selected or approved a Seattle owner.
03
What to watch next
The NBA and the selected ownership group announce the final price and signed deal terms.
Reports have discussed possible expansion prices, but no reviewed NBA source confirms a final Seattle price or a signed expansion deal.
04
What to watch next
The selected group and the NBA confirm the venue plan, team facilities, and required approvals.
The admitted sources describe one possible Climate Pledge Arena path and another reported new-arena proposal; they do not establish NBA approval, a team lease, facilities completion, or operating signoff for either plan.
05
What to watch next
The parties publish a completed rights agreement and the NBA confirms the team's name and treatment of Seattle history.
The 2008 settlement describes a conditional path for certain Seattle team rights if the NBA awards a team. Reviewed public sources do not document a later completed transfer, which is not proof that none exists.
06
What to watch next
The NBA publishes the rules and dates for choosing players and building the new team roster.
No current Seattle or Las Vegas expansion-draft rules were found in the reviewed official NBA sources. Historical rules do not establish what a new process would use.
07
What to watch next
The NBA confirms Seattle's first season and later publishes a schedule containing the team's first regular-season game.
The admitted official sources do not establish a Seattle start season or regular-season game. The 2028–29 date remains a planning possibility, not an NBA-published schedule.

Formal exploration, a functioning Seattle arena and visible prospective ownership create a credible path, but expansion, Seattle selection, admission terms and launch timing all remain unresolved. This case gives substantial weight to two-team expansion while retaining meaningful no-expansion, one-slot, staggered-award and delay risk.

Readiness-lag distribution
Exploration fails, narrows to one slot, or moves too slowly often enough that Seattle's pre-2030 path becomes a low-probability tail. This case treats preliminary bid activity and local arena readiness as helpful but insufficient against Board, market-selection, award-timing and post-award execution risk.

Readiness-lag distribution
The Board completes a two-team process, Seattle's venue and ownership preparation prove decisive, and the award arrives early enough for a planned season opening before 2030. The case remains below certainty because exploration can still fail and every public source stops short of an award or launch commitment.

Public sources inform the draft. Reports and our own review are labeled so they are not mistaken for NBA announcements.
This Date in the NBA: January
NBA.com's historical record identifies January 10, 2003 as the final Board award of Charlotte's expansion franchise, distinct from the December 2002 recommendation.
What this does not prove: A single historical award under a different league, media, arena, labor and ownership environment is context only and is not a trained timing calibration.
Date precision: date. Time zone: not listed.
Bobcats Build Inaugural Roster With 19 Picks In Expansion Selection
Charlotte's NBA-operated site records the June 22, 2004 expansion selection that built the inaugural Bobcats roster.
What this does not prove: Historical roster construction shows that draft rules are downstream implementation work; it does not establish current Seattle or Las Vegas rules or timing.
Date precision: instant. Time zone: EDT.
Washington Wizards vs. Charlotte Bobcats game summary
NBA.com's game record identifies Charlotte's November 4, 2004 regular-season opener, 664 days after the January 10, 2003 final Board award rather than the earlier December 2002 recommendation.
What this does not prove: The 664-day interval is one historical example, not a representative sample or evidence that a modern Seattle award would follow the same delivery path.
Date precision: event date. Time zone: not listed.
Frequently Asked Questions and Fast Facts
At retrieval, the arena operator said the building opened in 2021, listed basketball capacity at 18,300, and described it as designed for future NBA basketball and compliant with NBA standards.
What this does not prove: This is an operator assertion, not an NBA inspection, tenant approval, executed team lease, practice-facility plan or league certification.
Date precision: living page no publication timestamp. Time zone: not listed.
Public-record review of Seattle basketball rights arrangements
The reviewed public sources do not document a later executed assignment or license implementing the settlement's conditional intellectual-property path; this is a scoped editorial record-review conclusion, not proof that no nonpublic or subsequently published arrangement exists.
Our review of public pages. This is not an NBA announcement.
Checked through Sep 12, 2026, 8:11 PM PT.
What this does not prove: Public-record absence is not proof of nonexecution, and a definitive status change requires an executed instrument or attributable announcement from the transaction parties or NBA.
Date precision: review cutoff. Time zone: UTC.
Limitation: This is our review of public pages, not official confirmation from the NBA.
Review method: Manual review of the identified settlement and Seattle Clerk public-record entry point through the stated cutoff.

NBA Board of Governors approves exploration of expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle
The NBA Board authorized formal exploration of potential expansion to Seattle and Las Vegas and retained PJT Partners to evaluate markets, ownership groups, arena infrastructure and economics.
What this does not prove: Authorization to explore is not authorization to expand, does not specify a slot count, and does not award Seattle a franchise.
Date precision: date. Time zone: not listed.
Adam Silver addresses NBA expansion, Kawhi Leonard investigation and more
NBA.com reported Silver's July 14 media remarks that no expansion votes had been taken, discussions remained, prospective groups were pitching plans, and owners still sought a decision by year-end.
What this does not prove: The direct no-vote statement is a July status point, not evidence of unchanged status through September or proof that the year-end objective will be met.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver on league's plan to explore expansion in Seattle and Las Vegas
NBA.com reported Silver saying zero, one or two markets remained possible and that the league hoped to be ready to move ahead by the end of 2026; the article called 2028-29 a speculated inaugural season.
What this does not prove: The end-2026 objective is not binding, zero expansion remained explicit, and the article itself distinguished 2028-29 speculation from a confirmed launch season.
Date precision: displayed time timezone unknown. Time zone: not listed.
NBA announces schedule for 2026-27 season
The NBA's official August 13 release published the 2026-27 regular-season schedule for the existing league and did not establish a Seattle inaugural season.
What this does not prove: A 2026-27 schedule cannot rule out a later Seattle launch and is only a bounded check against claiming a current schedule slot.
Date precision: displayed time timezone unknown. Time zone: not listed.
One Roof Sports and Entertainment Announces Investor Update
One Roof identified Samantha Holloway as majority owner and managing partner, named additional investors, stated it would pursue a Seattle NBA team if expansion proceeds, and announced control of Climate Pledge Arena.
What this does not prove: This first-party ownership statement does not establish an NBA-accepted bid, preferred bidder, committed expansion-fee financing or Board approval.
Date precision: date. Time zone: not listed.
Memorandum of Understanding with Oak View Group
Seattle's arena framework contemplated a future NBA tenant, a Seattle-domiciled team lease and nonrelocation terms, while expecting NBA practice and administration facilities to be off-site.
What this does not prove: The framework is not an executed lease for a selected Seattle NBA franchise and leaves practice, headquarters and league approval work unresolved.
Date precision: month. Time zone: not listed.
Resolution 32198
Seattle Resolution 32198 declared the city's readiness for an NBA team and declared Climate Pledge Arena ready for an NBA team.
What this does not prove: The resolution records municipal policy and readiness claims; it is not an NBA venue inspection, franchise award, tenant lease or operating signoff.
Date precision: year. Time zone: not listed.
Second bidder steps up for Seattle expansion team, wants to build new arena outside city
NBC Sports, citing The Athletic, reported two prospective Seattle groups had made preliminary bids and described a second group's Marysville arena concept; the NBA had not publicly confirmed a Seattle award.
Reporting from a news outlet, not an NBA announcement.
What this does not prove: This is attributed reporting about preliminary activity, not NBA confirmation of bid acceptance, financing, slot order, venue approval or a franchise award.
Date precision: displayed time timezone unknown. Time zone: not listed.
Professional Basketball Club, LLC and City of Seattle Settlement Agreement
The 2008 settlement contains a conditional post-NBA-approval path for specified Seattle basketball intellectual property to transfer to a new Seattle owner on request and subject to NBA rules and approval.
What this does not prove: The agreement is conditional and does not itself establish whether any later assignment or license has been executed; the separate history-sharing provision was tied to an expansion approval within five years.
Date precision: date. Time zone: not listed.
This Date in the NBA: November
NBA.com's historical record says Toronto received a franchise on November 4, 1993 and the Canadian expansion teams debuted in November 1995, roughly a two-year award-to-launch interval.
What this does not prove: Toronto's roughly 729-day interval comes from a different two-country expansion and is context only, not a probability calibration for Seattle.
Date precision: date. Time zone: not listed.
